In an experiment spanning over 20 years, researchers at the University of Illinois have found that vulnerability to being caught by anglers is a heritable trait in largemouth bass.
The researchers breed bass that were more often caught and then breed bass that hadn't been caught. The result is that the offspring of each were likely to exhibit an even higher tendancy to either get caught or stay off the hook.
David Philipp, ecology and conservation researcher at U of I, explained that the experiment sped up what's actually happening in nature. "In the wild, the more vulnerable fish are being preferentially harvested, and as a result the bass population is being directionally selected to become less vulnerable.

The American Sport Fishing Association just issued a press release stating that both tackle and licence sales are up over the first quarter of 2008:
“People want a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively, and from what we’re being told; anglers are heading outdoors and putting a line in the water,” said American Sportfishing Association <http://www.asafishing.org/> (ASA) President and CEO Mike Nussman. “Although anglers, just as the general public, seem to be deferring higher end purchases, it’s clear that people are going fishing and purchasing tackle...”
Going hand in hand with strong tackle sales are increases in fishing license sales. A sample survey of state fish and wildlife agencies indicates that 2009 fishing license sales are up 11 percent in the first quarter (January – March) compared with the first quarter of 2008
With monthly mortgage foreclosures still setting state records I wonder if this good fishing news is true in your neighborhood? Are you buying and fishing more? Is your local shop up 10 per cent over last year?

In a press release from the Future Fisherman Foundation they mentioned that their Physh Ed National Fishing and Boating initiative has engaged over 14,000 students in fishing and boating activities since the start of the school year in September 2008.
I don't want to knock anything that gets kids outside, but fishing as physical education seems a stretch (or let's say that you don't need to stretch for it).

Register at one of 23 Patagonia stores across the country (excluding Cardiff, CA and Hawaii) between June 8 and June 29 for a chance to win one of two trips or a Patagonia gift card that can help outfit you for your next outdoor excursion.

I started fishing like many kids do, keenly watching a bobber, hoping my worm looked tasty to the granddaddy of all bass. Fishing was spending time with my dad, early mornings, a leaky 12-foot aluminum boat and my own Old Pal two-tray tackle box. I whispered over the edge, “Here fishy, fishy, fishy.”
As I got bigger so did my dad’s boats. He moved up to downriggers and bigger lakes, spending most of his time on the Great Lakes miles from shore fishing for lake trout and salmon. Meanwhile my interests remained on smaller lakes and rivers and my boats went the other way, getting smaller and smaller.
