If you're reading our 2010 Boat Buyer's Guide in the latest issue of Kayak Angler magazine you may notice something fishy about the specifications listed for the new Ocean Kayak Torque motorized kayak.
The art of taking great kayak fishing photos is something I'd love every photographer who shoots for this magazine to learn. Something I'd like to learn myself.
Here's how not to take a great kayak fishing photo: hold a fish in your lap and get your buddy to snap a photo of you grinning.
Okay, the grip and grin has a certain appeal, but also a certain lack of appeal when you've seen 1,000 of them. How do you get take great kayak fishing photos that truly convey the spirit of the sport?
If you wonder what type of oddball products cross an editor’s inbox, here’s one for you, “a unique gift for the hunter and outdoorsman”:
Naked Camo.
The color scheme seems like it will blend into the wilderness as most camo does. However the pattern is suspicious. What do they think we’re hiding in?
RAM-Rod has a new rod holder coming out in January called the Light-Speed.
For spinning reels and baitcasters, this rod holder is designed with quick-draw, breakaway action so you don't miss a strike, while still being secure enough for rough water.
For any of you who think the wave has crested, it's worth noting that the mainstream media is still "discovering" kayak fishing on what seems like a weeklly basis.
New Orleans' daily newspaper, the Times-Picayune, ran a feature story last week about the kayak fishing scene in Louisiana, profiling local angler Blake Gill.
The article points out some of the key benefits of kayak fishing that we already know about, saying of Gill:
...he never burns any gas. He doesn't use a trailer to haul his boats. And he usually ends his week in better shape physically than when he started.
I just took delivery of an Origo Fishing Pro watch for review. This is a watch that tells you when to go fishing with its "Best Fishing Time" feature, which can be programmed to trigger an alarm.
In case you needed that.
Anytime is a good time to go fishing in my book. But now you can look at your watch and say,
A big-name reel manufacturer scrambles their PR team to promote their sponsorship of a kayak fishing tournament winner.
A few years ago this would have been unimaginable. But it just happened.
This press release from Ardent just landed on my desk, announcing (a week after we ran the story) Gilbert Hernandez' win of the 2009 Plastic Navy Tournament Trail.
It's further evidence that kayak fishing is going mainstream.
Gilbert Hernandez has two kids, a full-time job, a wife who also works full-time. He lost his cousin to breast cancer, his father was in the hospital, and he had a sinus condition that required surgery.
He also lives two hours from the ocean.
Yet somehow he made time to fish.
A lot.
And to beat out over 200 other anglers to win Angler of the Year at the Plastic Navy Tournament Trail. Read his full story in our feature here.
This has got me thinking, how can any of us ever have an excuse not to go fishing again?
