A surgeon’s steady hands can put sturgeon in your hands

White sturgeon are the largest freshwater game fish in the United States. These prehistoric monsters can grow to 4.6 metres (15 feet) long and weigh in at more than 1500 pounds. Sturgeon are bottom dwellers that split their lives between deep freshwater holes and relatively shallow saltwater estuaries, migrating annually from the ocean to their riverine breeding grounds.

How to Slow Dance Your Bait for Bigger Trout

The Big Bend Wildlife Management area east of the Econfina River offers unrivaled kayak fishing during this time of year. The water is too shallow for many motor boaters so competition for the area’s king-sized speckled trout is scarce.

A unique approach equals a fresh bite

A lay-down—or tree that has fallen into the water—draws congregations of spring largemouth bass like no other cover. The trunk soaks up the sun’s warmth during the day, and radiates it back out during the cool night. Male largemouth build spawning beds up against wood to make nest defending easier. With late spring and summer grass beds yet to emerge, forage draws tight to wood as well.
