Katyakker, When your right your right. Lighting a fire in my SINK would not be wise. I am just jealous that Powman has both a SOT and SINK.

That's a tough one. My concern with that would be that no matter how well you try to patch a hole of that size, leaks would be probable if not inevitable.

You are probably better off ponying up the money and getting the right holders for your boat.

Sorry.

Peter Stelmacovich created a new topic Flush mount rod holders in the forums.
I have just discovered that the flush mount rod holders in both my Pungo and Tarpon are open at the bottom. These were NOT the rod holders installed by Wilderness Systems on their angler versions, but rather installed by the dealer.

My fear is that water could into the body of the kayaks. Is there a way to close off the bottom of these rod holders to prevent water from potentially getting in?

Well, like I said. I have both a SINK and a SOT. Oops I meant my wife has the SINK now. I better be careful!

I am sure she will let me "borrow" the Pungo 140 on the cooler days.

hopefully this one will have the same effect......probably going to try Friday afternoon right after the storm has moved further north.

Here's another cool light...I picked one up at Bass Pro, but they don't carry them (at least not at the shop by my house) anymore:

Nite Ize LED

It's waterproof, floats, and has a strobe function. I bought it for $10 but the MSRP is like $18...They come in several cool colors, but mine is white.

Welcome Rick from a fellow OK! I live in the Tulsa area. Where in the state do you hale from?

Lure wise, I always go to a MirrOlure MirrOdine...red head with the white body. This little lure has caught so many fish for me.

I hear that cut ladyfish is a terrific bait for catching reds as well.

I got the Ascend FS12 from Bass Pro. It is my first yak so I just went simple. I have learned so much already. I fished 6 hours this morning.

I am going to look you up when I am on 30A this winter.

It looks like you had a great time!

About fly fishing, here are a couple tips.

First, install an anchor trolley and either anchor when fly fishing or deploy a drift chute; I always keep both on hand. Position your boat so that the breeze is blowing slightly away from your kayak so that you don't end up with the fly in your ear.

Second, some place a towel on their laps to strip their line. I simply strip the line directly in the water on the side opposite the anchor trolley (starboard side).

Third, using a weight-forward line will allow you to cast in sidearm barrel rolls instead of overhead casts. I deploy just enough line to cast, then strip line as I cast to increase distance to about ten to twenty yards. I don't false cast any more than necessary, such as to dry the fly.

Fourth, I don't try to cast to the fifty-yard line! You don't need a long casting distance to be effective. That is what a stealthy kayak is for!

Have fun!

Joel C. replied to the topic Re: SLR Flash Batteries. What are you using? in the forums.
I haven't switched to lithium batteries yet. I can go to Costco, buy those megapacks of batteries for a really good price, and burn through them on all of my electronic items.

I'm still wary of lithium; they work well, and they are quite the rage, but there are a lot of negatives. The big negative is using them around water; they can be quite dangerous under certain conditions. They are also not as "environmentally friendly" as many believe, at least no better than what we have now unless you do some logic wrangling (e.g., more power means less need for batteries, equals less waste...).

Lithium bateries surely make nice power sources for laptops and power tools, though!

I just returned from a weeklong canoe camping fishing trip trip with my family. Great trip, I'll post photos tomorrow.

I realized my SLR flash batteries are done. What are you guys using for AAs? Have you gone to Lithium? Any suggestions? I've been milking these ones for a while now, so I feel way out of date.

Thanks.

Russ what kind of yak did you get? We go out of Inlet Beach a lot for snapper & grouper. We also have a kayak club for our area ... on facebook PCKFA. If you give me your email I can add you to my contacts.

great idea.....i bet that would leave a nice small space for storage under the crate for items that are not being used all the time. that is a very nice organizer on the front of the crate, where did you get it?

i realize this post is kind of old but i was just browsing different topics and came across this one. yes i have used banjo minnows. i have used them quite a bit actually. From my freshwater experiences they are great, very life like in the water. in saltwater i have never had much success. for an infomercial lure they work really well and come in many colors and sizes.
